— When people who once crossed the sea meet digital humans, a journey beyond time and space begins.
A monograph comprising the exhibition documentation of Yuki Harada Solo Exhibition: Go stay go pakiki all da time! Eh… no give up ‘til you pau! (2023), held at the Museum of Japanese Emigration to Hawaii in Suo-Oshima, Yamaguchi Prefecture; the scripts for the video series Shadowing (2022–); and texts by the artist, curator, and contributors.
The Shadowing series by artist Yuki Harada is a body of video work in which Harada “shadows” — repeating aloud — scripts read by Japanese Americans, tracing the paths of emigrants through the lens of folklorist Tsuneichi Miyamoto and reimagining their stories as new narratives for the present.
Five scripts from the series are published in bilingual Japanese and English, including passages in Pidgin English. Also included is a reprint of Miyamoto’s essay “Umi Yukaba” (“If I Go to Sea”), a text that resonated deeply with the artist’s research.
Essays on the tensions and critiques surrounding artistic practice, and on history and the sea, move back and forth between past and future — taking a single exhibition as their point of departure and inviting us on a voyage across open water.
周防大島、ハワイ、台湾
──かつて海をわたった人々とデジタルヒューマンが交差するとき、時空を超える旅がはじまる
山口県周防大島町の日本ハワイ移民資料館で開催された「原田裕規 個展 やっぱり世の中で一ばんえらいのが人間のようでごいす」（2023年）の展示記録および、映像作品「シャドーイング」シリーズ（2022年～）台本、著者と企画者および寄稿者によるテキストで構成するモノグラフ。
アーティスト・原田裕規による「シャドーイング」シリーズは、⽇系アメリカ⼈が読み上げる台本を原⽥が「シャドーイング（復唱）」して追いかけ、移⺠たちの⾜跡を⺠俗学者・宮本常⼀の視点を交えながら、現代を⽣きるアーティストが新たな物語として描き出す映像作品です。
その台本5篇をピジン英語を含む日英表記で掲載。著者が参照し共鳴したテキストとして、宮本常一のエッセイ「海ゆかば」を再録します。
芸術作品への葛藤と批評、歴史と海をめぐるエッセイは、ひとつの展覧会を起点に過去と未来を往還しながら、わたしたちを海上の旅へと誘います。
