The “Open Studio” program at Nagano Prefectural Art Museum invites artists to reside at the museum for a set period, creating new work and sharing both the process and the completed pieces with the public.
For the fourth edition in 2024, the museum invited Yuki Harada — an artist whose practice draws on seemingly insignificant visual culture, employing technology, research, and performance to produce his work.
In the course of researching Nagano for the residency, Harada found himself drawn to two key themes: landscape representation and printing technology. Having long explored what he calls “dreamscapes” — digitally rendered landscape imagery — Harada engaged deeply with Nagano’s landscape traditions and created new CG-based works in response.
In a first for the museum, Harada also served as guest curator for NAM Collection 2024 III Another Landscapes. Through works depicting the distinctive landscapes of Nagano — including language-based pieces by Yutaka Matsuzawa inspired by the motif of the “wilderness” — the exhibition traced the relationship between the region’s various locales and their representation in art.
This publication documents the full arc of Open Studio vol.4 Yuki Harada: Dreamscape: from the preparatory stages through the residency itself, its connections to NAM Collection 2024 III Another Landscapes, and the exhibition record — alongside interviews and columns featuring practitioners in the fields of landscape representation and printing technology. Together, they capture Harada’s journey in pursuit of a dreamlike landscape.
長野県立美術館の｢公開制作」は、アーティストが一定期間美術館に滞在して作品を制作し、その制作過程や完成した作品を紹介するプログラムです。
4回目となった2024年度は、とるにたらない視覚文化をモチーフに、テクノロジー、リサーチ、パフォーマンスなどを駆使して作品を制作しているアーティスト・原田裕規を招聘しました。
原田は、公開制作のために長野をリサーチする中で、｢風景表現」と｢印刷技術」という2つのキーワードに関心を示します。今回の公開制作では、近年「ドリームスケープ」と呼ばれるデジタル風景表現について考察・制作を重ねてきた原田が、長野の風景表現に向き合い、CGで新たな風景作品を生み出しました。
また当館初の試みとして、NAMコレクション2024第Ⅲ期のゲストキュレーターを原田が担当しました。このコレクション展では｢もうひとつの風景」というタイトルのもと、長野の特徴的な風景を描いた作品や、｢荒野」をモチーフとした松澤宥の言葉の作品などを通じて、長野県の各地域と風景表現の関わりが示されました。
本書では、｢公開制作vol.4 原田裕規 ドリームスケープ」を実施するにあたって、その準備段階から、実際の公開制作の様子、「NAMコレクション2024第Ⅲ期 もうひとつの風景」との関りと展示の記録、風景表現と印刷技術に関わる方々へのインタビューやコラムなどを収録し、原田が「夢のような風景」を追った旅の様子を凝縮しました。
