We are pleased to announce Shinrei-Shashin / New Jersey, a solo exhibition by Yuki Harada.
This exhibition serves as a culmination of Harada’s “Photography Series,” following Shinrei-Shashin (2012, co-curated with Ryutaro Sakae) and Author Unknown (2017). Presented as two parallel yet distinct chapters—Shinrei-Shashin and New Jersey—the exhibition invites viewers to traverse dual timelines that frame the photographic image, offering an experience of moving between two temporal dimensions.
In the Shinrei-Shashin section, spirit photographs “found” by Harada in various locations are exhibited in a manner that self-consciously flaunts the very method of their display.
The New Jersey section features photographs taken by Harada during his trip to New Jersey. Here, he assumes the role of a fictional discoverer, presenting his own photographs as if they were “found photos,” accompanied by imagined “correspondences” written from the perspective of their supposed taker.
Why present the works in this way?
In developing this exhibition, Harada conducted a research-based residency in New Jersey and spent about a year in Japan collecting photographs in collaboration with antique dealers and industrial waste handlers. Through this process, he acquired thousands of photographs—only to confront the fundamental difficulty of viewing images without any captions or context. Surrounded by a vast number of anonymous photographs, with no clue as to who took them, what they depict, or why, he began to experience a mounting unease, akin to an obsession.
At the same time, he became aware that this discomfort could be instantly neutralized by imposing a familiar frame of reference—be it “souvenir photo,” “art photography,” or “ghost photograph.” This led him to question even the sense of affection directed toward photos one has taken oneself. Harada chose to suspend himself in that ambivalent state: unable to fully abandon such attachments, yet resisting the comfort they provide. The exhibition, with its two timelines running in parallel, emerges from this very tension.
To coincide with the exhibition, Harada will also release his first photobook artwork (ed. 30), which will be presented and available for pre-order at the venue.

原田裕規の個展「心霊写真／ニュージャージー」を開催します。
本展は、原田が2012 年に行った「心霊写真」展（榮龍太朗との共同企画）、2017 年に行った「作者不詳」展に続く「写真シリーズ」の総集編に位置付けられます。展覧会場では、それぞれ異なるタイムラインに属する2 つの展示が並走するように、全体は「心霊写真編」と「ニュージャージー編」で構成され、イメージの周りを囲い込む2つの時間を往来するような体験が得られるでしょう。
「心霊写真編」では、原田が様々な場所で「発見 found」した心霊写真が、その手法自体を「ひけらかす」ように展示されます。
「ニュージャージー編」では、原田がニュージャージーに赴いて撮影した写真を「自ら発見したもの found-photo」と思い込み、撮影者の気持ちを想像して書いた「通信」を添えることによって「架空の作者」を立ち上げることが試みられます。
このような方法で展示が行われるのはなぜでしょうか？
原田はこの展覧会を実現するにあたり、ニュージャージーで滞在制作し、日本国内でおよそ1年間にわたり古物商や産廃業者とともに写真を収集してまわりました。その結果、数千枚の写真を手にした原田が直面したことは、キャプションが付随しない写真を見ることの困難さでした。誰が・何を・なぜ撮ったのかもわからない膨大なイメージに囲まれたとき、そこには強迫観念に近い不安感が生み出されたのです。
しかし、かたやそこに「記念写真」「芸術写真」「心霊写真」などといった認識のフレーム（frame｜枠｜額縁）が与えられた途端に、その困難が忘却されてしまうことにも気が付きました。そこで、自ら撮影した写真に向けられた眼差しを囲い込む「愛着」についてさえも疑いの目を向けるようになり、しかしその愛着をぎりぎり捨てきることもできない状態に「宙吊り」になることを選択し、これら2つの時間が並走するような展覧会が実現しました。
本展の開催にあわせて、作家にとっては初となる「写真集作品」（ed.30）も会場で発表・予約販売されます。
