The Open Studio program invites artists to stay at the museum for a designated period to create new works, offering the public an opportunity to observe both the creative process and the finished pieces. For its fourth edition, we welcome Yuki Harada, an artist known for his unique practice that draws on overlooked visual cultures—what he terms “Insignificant Arts”—and employs a mix of technology, research, and performance.
For the people of Nagano, the mountainous landscapes that surround them are not only an everyday sight but also a rich resource for tourism. One of the Nagano Prefectural Art Museum’s core collection policies is the acquisition of landscape artworks depicting the region’s striking alpine scenery. Many artists, drawn to Nagano for reasons such as travel, mountaineering, summer retreats, or wartime evacuation, have created works that capture these natural vistas. At the same time, Nagano has long been a center for optical and printing technologies—now key local industries. It may not be a coincidence that many people here, drawn to mountains, also photograph and share these landscapes extensively.
During his preliminary research in Nagano, Harada became particularly interested in the dual themes of landscape representation and printing technology. In this Open Studio project, he engages with landscape imagery from Nagano through the lens of “dreamscapes”—a form of digital landscape expression that has gained popularity online in recent years. His evolving process and reflections will be made visible to the public as he works toward a completed artwork.
In addition, for the first time in the museum’s history, Harada will serve as guest curator for NAM Collection 2024: Part III. This exhibition will explore connections between Nagano’s diverse regions and their landscape representations, featuring works depicting local scenery as well as conceptual pieces such as those by Yutaka Matsuzawa, whose “wilderness”-themed text works form part of the museum’s holdings.

公開制作は、アーティストが一定期間美術館に滞在して作品を制作し、その制作過程や完成した作品をご覧いただくプログラムです。vol.4となる今年度は、とるにたらない視覚文化をモチーフに、テクノロジー、リサーチ、パフォーマンスなどを駆使して作品を制作している原田裕規を招へいします。
長野県民にとって、山々の連なる風景は日常であるとともに、多くの人を魅了する観光資源でもあります。長野県立美術館は、コレクションポリシーのひとつとして、美しい山岳風景を描いた表現を挙げており、旅行や登山、避暑、疎開等さまざまな理由で長野に訪れ、描いてきた作家たちの風景表現を多数コレクションしています。他方、長野では、光学や印刷の技術が発達し主要な産業となっています。山を愛好し、それらを撮影・発表する人たちが大勢いることと、どこかでつながりがあるのかもしれません。
原田は、公開制作のために長野をリサーチする中で、この「風景表現」と「印刷技術」という二つのキーワードに関心を示しました。今回の公開制作では、近年「ドリームスケープ」という名称でインターネットを中心に流行しているデジタル風景表現について考察・制作を重ねてきた原田が、長野の風景表現に向き合い、作品として昇華していく様子が公開されます。
また当館初の試みとして、NAMコレクション2024第Ⅲ期のゲストキュレーターを原田が担当します。長野の風景が描かれた作品や、「荒野」をモチーフとした松澤宥の言葉の作品などを通じて、長野県の各地域と風景表現の関わりが示されることになります。

＊日没～19:30頃まで、ガラス面に展示している原田裕規の作品《残照》をライトアップしています。（※美術館内へのご入館は17:00までとなります。）

In this open discussion, the artist will speak about the ongoing Open Studio project while engaging participants in a conversation about “mountains”—a theme that will also inform the development of new work.

② Closing Event: “Tracing Kaii Higashiyama”
The exhibited work Afterglow, created during the Open Studio, draws inspiration from the paintings of Kaii Higashiyama. This event invites participants to listen to Higashiyama’s words (as written in his essays), view his works at the Higashiyama Kaii Gallery, and finally visit his gravesite.
*Please note: The second half of the program includes about 60 minutes of walking outdoors. Please wear comfortable clothing and footwear. Participants unable to join the walk may attend only the first half of the event.

②クロージング「東山魁夷をめぐる」
公開制作で展示中の《残照》をはじめ、原田が制作の着想源にしてきた東山魁夷の作品。本イベントでは東山の言葉（エッセイに書かれた文章）に耳を傾け、東山魁夷館で作品を見て、最後に東山魁夷の墓所へ参ります。
＊後半60分ほど、美術館を出て屋外を歩きます。歩きやすい服装でご参加ください。（ご参加が難しい方は前半トークのみの参加も可能です。）
