This exhibition, Shinrei-Shashin, brings together so-called ghost photographs and contemporary artworks by visual artists.
At its core, art has the capacity to evoke perception, memory, and embodied experience in the viewer.
When we stand before a ghost photograph—especially one in which we perceive the presence of a ghost—we engage in a peculiar act: we generate an image that ought not to be visible. Likewise, encountering artworks in a museum or gallery elicits deeply personal and subjective responses.
Can these two phenomena—both grounded in acts of seeing—be presented as parallel structures of experience?
At times, a powerful artwork transcends its creator and acquires an aura of sacredness or magical force. In this sense, the impersonal and uncanny qualities of ghost photographs mirror the “objecthood” of such artworks: both are marked by an absence of author and the presence of an invisible agency. While these two entities emerge from different foundations, they may share certain essential concerns.
The process of engaging with an artwork—facing it, perceiving it, and generating a personal experience—parallels the artist’s own creative process. Indeed, the act of viewing may itself be seen as an extension of making. For the artist, perception and production are two sides of the same coin; and this dynamic, once set in motion, is something neither viewer nor artist can fully escape.
In this exhibition, works by painter Koutaro Inoue—who captures traces of human presence in architecture—and photographer Takeshi Hyakutou—who explores the boundary between the natural and the artificial—are presented alongside ghost photographs.
We hope this juxtaposition encourages all viewers, regardless of background, to confront the unavoidable complexities of perception and recognition.

このたびの「心霊写真」展では、心霊写真と美術作家の作品を展示いたします。
美術作品はその基本的な性質の一つとして、鑑賞者へ何らかの知覚や体験を想起させるという一面を持っています。
我々は心霊写真を目の前にしたとき──そしてそこに心霊の存在を見出した場合──見えないはずのイメージの生成を行います。他方、美術館やギャラリーで展示された作品を鑑賞することは、個人的な体験の生成を促します。
この現象を、パラレルな構造を持つ2つの在り方として提示することは可能でしょうか。
優れた美術作品は時として作者の固有名を離れ、それ自体で「呪物性」や「礼拝性」を獲得します。心霊写真の持つ作者の不在性や呪物性は、この点でも優れた作品とパラレルな関係を結びます。立脚点の異なる２つの存在ですが、そこに共有している問題を認めることができるかもしれません。
また、作品を鑑賞する際に対象を見据えて自己の体験を生成するプロセスは、そのまま作家の制作プロセスに対応します。さらに、制作活動でさえ、その延長にあるとも言えます。鑑賞は制作と表裏一体であり、制作者にとっては制作の一部として成立します。この事実は、誰であれ──その作品の作者ですら──避けることが出来ない事象として現前します。
「心霊写真」に対する「作品」には、人家や人の痕跡を描く画家の井上光太郎、自然と人工の狭間を切り取る写真家の百頭たけしの作品を展示いたします。
この試みによって、どのような立場の鑑賞者にとっても、自己の知覚と認識が避けがたい問題として見出されることとなれば幸いです。
